Understanding our fees TissuPath's outstanding anatomic pathologists and cytogeneticists want to ensure that you, the patient, get the most accurate information from the specimens your doctor has sent us, and that this information is communicated to your doctor – and then to you – as quickly and comprehensively as possible.
An anatomic pathologist's (histopathologist's) opinion is most often sought to determine if there is cancer, and cancer is a disease which demands the very best diagnostic talent. It would be a tragedy if a biopsy of cancer was misread as being normal (as proper therapy would not be initiated), or if a biopsy of a benign lesion was misread as showing cancer, as inappropriately aggressive treatment might well be undertaken. Hence you would want the outcome of pathology review – for example, the decision as to whether you have cancer or not – to be as close to 100% accurate as possible and to be available as quickly as possible. An opinion from a cytogeneticist is often sought when serious genetic abnormalities are suspected in an unborn child – again a situation where fast and accurate diagnosis is critical, and where you want to be able to rely on test results. TissuPath's fee schedule reflects the specialty expertise of our pathologists and our cytogeneticists, as well as the special services which we offer which may be unattainable from routine pathology laboratories such as prostate cancer volumetrics and FISH analysis for chromosome deletions. As a result, our fees are generally somewhat higher than the relevant Medicare rebate. Most health insurance companies will fund the small difference between our fees and the Medicare rebate. If you are insured by one of the few companies which do not provide adequate reimbursement for specialist pathology testing, you may be liable for the difference, which will in most cases be less than about $100. Some of our services, despite being of fully-established benefit to the patient, are not Medicare rebateable; in this instance, we must recoup the full cost from the patient. Your doctor can advise you about TissuPath's histopathology and cytopathology fees in advance. We are always happy to discuss our services and fees with you.
